The AT33xMONO/II is the latest update to Audio-Technica's long-running AT33 Series — its first extensive overhaul in years — bringing added warmth and fullness to playback. Technological and material improvements, including the first use of die-cast zinc at the base of the cartridge to ward off unwanted resonance, improve expressiveness in the mid to low frequencies and help reveal fine detail across the audio spectrum.
The AT33xMONO/II features a "True Mono" dual moving coil design that is unaffected by any vertical noise components picked up from the record groove, instead generating an electrical signal only from horizontal movement. This results in exceptionally clear monaural sound with a more substantial low end and reduced surface noise, and the dual mono coil design is also ideal for mono playback on a stereo system. To further enhance monaural performance, the cartridge uses a 0.65 mil conical nude stylus, suited to tracking the constant width and depth of mono record grooves. A newly developed suspension mechanism uses piano wire for improved tracking accuracy, slightly lowering the dynamic compliance for more substantial audio, particularly in the mid-low range.
The composite body — made of die-cast zinc, aluminium and high-rigidity polymer — reduces and disperses resonance across the whole body for balanced, natural reproduction that does not favour particular frequencies. PCOCC (Pure Copper by Ohno Continuous Casting) coils ensure pure, smooth signal transmission, while a samarium cobalt magnet and pure iron yoke — shaped for optimal monaural reproduction — provide highly efficient power generation and warm, richly textured playback that is particularly suited to mid-20th-century mono jazz recordings. As with all AT33x Series cartridges, the body includes threaded holes for easy two-screw mounting, which is especially useful with an integrated tonearm.
Please note: the AT33xMONO/II's stylus assembly is not field-replaceable, but Audio-Technica offers a fee-based Moving Coil Exchange Program to service the cartridge.
Ideal For
Warm, full-bodied monaural playback of acoustic recordings, particularly mono jazz from the 1950s and '60s, including mono playback on a stereo system and mounting to integrated tonearms.
Features
- AT33x Series dual moving coil monaural cartridge with 0.65 mil conical nude stylus
- Preserves the warmth and fullness of acoustic instruments, such as those captured on mono jazz recordings from the 1950s and '60s
- "True Mono" dual moving coil design only generates electrical signal with horizontal movement for exceptionally clear monaural sound with a more substantial low end and reduced surface noise
- PCOCC (Pure Copper by Ohno Continuous Casting) coils for pure, smooth signal transmission
- Samarium cobalt magnet and pure iron yoke (shaped for optimal monaural sound reproduction) provide highly efficient power generation and warm, richly textured playback
- Composite cartridge body (die-cast zinc, aluminium and high-rigidity polymer) reduces resonance throughout the body for balanced, natural reproduction
- Highly rigid, dense die-cast zinc at the base of the cartridge suppresses unwanted vibrations and improves mid-to-low frequency expressiveness
- Threaded mounting holes make it easier to mount the cartridge to a headshell, especially one integrated into a tonearm
- 0.65 mil conical nude stylus tracks the centre of the record groove for reliable performance and excellent fidelity
- High-hardness duralumin pipe cantilever
- Newly developed suspension mechanism and rubber damper design (with lower dynamic compliance than other A-T cartridges) allow use with a variety of tonearms
- Thick gold plating on the terminal pins reduces contact resistance and enhances sound quality
- Crafted and hand-finished by artisans in Japan
